Unions and Royal Mail extend deadline for talks

Recently privatised Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have extended the deadline for an agreement on workers pay and conditions to 3 December. The parties said there had been progress in reaching a deal on pensions and working conditions.

Dave Ward, deputy secretary general of the CWU, said:

We are confident that negotiations will conclude during this extended period.

Today's announcement marks yet another extension of talks, following on from the extension agreed on 13 November. The dispute between royal mail and the CWU has now been running for months.

In October the CWU cancelled a one-strike to allow talks to progress further. CWU members had previously voted 4-1 in favour of strike action, despite the company offering a £300 bonus if they committed to stay at work.
