Watch: Jack Reacher author Lee Child on the Amazon row

Jack Reacher author Lee Child appeared on Newsnight yesterday to explain why he and hundreds of other authors have spoken out against Amazon.

The etail giant is in a stand-off over pricing with publishing group Hachette, which has the rights to authors as varied as JK Rowling (post-Harry Potter), Stephenie Meyer of Twilight fame, crime writer Martina Cole and cult figure Douglas Adams, as well as literary luminaries such as Donna Tartt.

It is also in dispute with Disney.

The interview followed an open letter signed by Child and many other writers complaining that Amazon had "single[d] out a group of authors, who are not involved in the dispute, for selective retaliation".

The letter urged readers to email Amazon boss Jeff Bezos over the dispute.

Amazon has similarly published an open letter to readers claiming that ebooks are being "opposed by the literary establishment" and that they "can and should be less expensive".
