What to watch in Rio: Mark Cavendish and David Rudisha in Monday’s must-watch events at the Olympics

British cycling hero Mark Cavendish is aiming to end his long wait for an Olympic medal to add to his otherwise illustrious career in the men's omnium, which concludes on Monday evening.

The omnium pits riders against each other in six individual races with the final three events; the time trial, the flying lap and the points race, scheduled for 2:21pm, 8pm and 9:23pm respectively.

After the men's winner has been decided, Laura Trott's bid for a medal in the women's omnium continues in the often thrilling elimination race, the third event of the competition, at 10:17pm.

In the Olympic Stadium, Christine Ohuruogu will be a familiar face to British fans after winning 400m gold in Beijing and a silver in London. She races in the final of the same event deep into the night at 2:45am on Tuesday morning.

Almost 12 hours earlier at 1:35pm, Britain's fastest woman Dina Asher-Smith will be in action for the first time in the opening round of the women's 200m. She will up against a stacked field of stars that includes Dutch golden girl Dafne Schippers and Jamaican 100m gold medal winner Elaine Thompson.

Also worth looking out for in athletics will be David Rudisha's gold medal defence in the men's 800m final at 02:25am.

Swimming moves out of the pool and into open water for the women's marathon at 1pm. Team GB's Keri-Anne Payne won bronze eight years ago in Beijing but narrowly missed out on a podium in London by finishing fourth in the 10km race.

There are also British medal hopes in sailing. Briton Nick Thompson is out of the running for gold in the men's laser medal race at 6:05pm. He currently sits in sixth and needs to make up a 10 point gap to third.

In the laser radial class final race an hour earlier, Alison Young has even more ground to make up with the British sailor currently in eighth position.

Charlotte Dujardin, who helped Team GB to silver in the dressage last week is favourite to win gold in the individual grand prix freestyle at 2pm.
