Win trophies or I’m off, says Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas has warned Arsenal he will leave to join Real Madrid if the club go another season without winning a trophy.

Reports say Real president Ramon Calderon is preparing a big-money offer for the Spanish international after giving up hope of luring Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

But while the 21-year-old insists he wants to stay at the Emirates Stadium for the time being, he has hinted that another season without silverware could prompt him to make the move back to Spain next summer.

Fabregas helped Spain lift the European Championship trophy over the summer and has obviously caught the winning bug. The Gunners haven’t claimed a major trophy in three years, while Fabregas is convinced Real will successfully defend their La Liga title this season.

“To be four seasons without winning any titles would be too much for me,” Fabregas said. “Real Madrid are the favourites to win La Liga this year.

“I didn’t tell Ramon Calderon no. I told him that now wasn’t the time to go to Madrid. That you are wanted by Madrid, one of the biggest teams in history, is important.”

Fabregas has been continually linked with a move back to his homeland, although his first club Barcelona were widely tipped to be his first choice. But with Real now unlikely to succeed in world record bid for Ronaldo, Calderon is sounding out the creative midfielder.

Fabregas, however, admits that Ronaldo remains ahead of him on the Real wish list and believes the Portuguese winger would be a good acquisition. “The league and the Champions League that United won this season was because of Cristiano,” he continued. “At Madrid, he would help them win titles.”
