Yahoo’s US web traffic overtakes Google in July

YAHOO chief executive Marissa Mayer scored a coup over her former employer Google yesterday, after new figures showed its web services pulled in more visitors than Google for the first time in more than two years.

A total of 196.6m unique users visited Yahoo sites last month, pushing it ahead of Google which attracted 192.2m to its sites, including YouTube.

The data, provided by ComScore, does not include Yahoo’s recent acquisition of blogging site Tumblr, which had a further 38.4m visits during July.

It also excludes sites visited via mobiles.

Yahoo’s visitors rose by 21 per cent on the same period last year, sending it into the top spot from third place in 2012, when it lagged behind both Google and Microsoft sites.

The latest data shows Microsoft – which owns the Bing search engine – slipped into third place with 179.6m visitors, with Facebook and AOL completing the top five.

Yahoo last claimed the top spot in May 2011, when Carol Bartz was in charge and Mayer was still at Google.

New entrants onto the chart since last July included social media platform Pinterest, which pulled in 25.4m visitors, and Conde Nast digital, which had 25.8m visitors to its sites including Vogue, Glamour and GQ.

Shares in Yahoo have risen more than 80 per cent since Mayer joined last July, but the firm posted a seven per cent drop in second-quarter revenue last month, as it lost share in the US advertising market.
