What you need to know about Mark Tucker, the newly confirmed chairman of HSBC and former man from the Pru

Mark Tucker, currently chief exec of AIA and once the man from the Pru, has been confirmed to replace HSBC's departing chairman Douglas Flint.

But Tucker's life might have gone down a different path entirely as he once trained to be a professional football player.

Although he may have hung up his boots for studying business management at the University of Leeds and then passing accountancy exams in the 1980s, various reports suggest the 59-year-old is still an avid Chelsea fan. However, best not tell that to Tottenham Hotspur – AIA is the team's shirt sponsor.

Other caps previously worn by Tucker include stints as a non-executive director of the Court of The Bank of England and as group financial director at Hbos between 2004 and 2005 – long before it collapsed in the fallout of the financial crisis and had to be rescued by Lloyds.

He is, however, perhaps better known as the former man from the Pru. Tucker was chief executive of the insurance giant from 2005 until 2009.

From there, he went onto pan-Asian-focused AIA, successfully spearheading the insurer's float in late 2010.

He has also been an independent director at Wall Street titan Goldman Sachs since 2012, although it is widely thought he will be asked to give up this role when he steps into Flint's shoes from 1 October.
