Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has won an overwhelming majority of Constituency Labour Party (CLP) nominations ahead of the election against challenger Owen Smith.

Corbyn won the nominations of 285 CLPs, with Owen Smith claiming just 53.

Although the nominations have no direct consequence on how the election will pan out, they provide an indication of the support enjoyed by the candidates across the country.

A spokesperson for the Jeremy for Labour campaign said: “Jeremy Corbyn is the only candidate who can draw on support from Labour members right across our country. These results further suggest that Labour members strongly support Jeremy Corbyn in his bid to remain Labour leader.

“Our campaign will continue to make the positive case for democracy in our party and for Jeremy Corbyn's plan to rebuild and transform Britain so that no-one and nowhere is left behind.”

During the leadership election last year, when there were four candidates including Corbyn, the incumbent leader received 39 per cent of the nominations.

Owen Smith's campaign was not available for comment at the time of writing.
