Businesses including Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin will be invited to give evidence to MPs in Coventry later this week as part of a probe into the government's industrial strategy.

MPs on parliament's Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee will take evidence at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in the East Midlands city on Thursday.

Witnesses will include Rolls-Royce director of global manufacturing Hamid Mughal and Aston Martin chief executive Andy Palmer.

Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke will also give evidence, while local groups like the Solihull Metropolitan Business Council, Aston Business School and West Midlands Combined Authority will also be represented.

It will be the first time the committee has taken evidence under its new BEIS remit, having been rebranded after the closure of the old Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Committee chair Iain Wright said: “A competitive manufacturing sector and skilled workforce are vital for a well-balanced and prosperous economy.

“That is why we are keen to hear the views of manufacturers, business leaders, academics and local government on what the government’s industrial strategy must look like if it is to help the sector, the midlands and the UK as a whole to thrive.”

MPs will also be given a tour of the MTC, a purpose-built facility to develop and demonstrate new technologies on an industrial scale.
