Police intercept another suspicious package sent to CNN as suspect set to appear in court

A third suspicious package sent to CNN in a week was intercepted in Atlanta today.

The package was identical to the others allegedly sent by pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc, the news agency reported.

"There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center,” CNN president Jeff Zucker told staff in a memo, according to CNN.

Atlanta’s Police Department were called at 9.38am local time to a post office close to CNN Center offices.

The two other packages sent to CNN last week were mail bombs, with the first on Wednesday sparking a mass evacuation after it was addressed to former CIA director John Brennan.

Brennan works for NBC, not CNN.

The second, addressed to ex-National Intelligence director James Clapper and CNN at the Time Warner Center, was discovered at a nearby post office.

Sayoc was arrested late on Friday in connection with at least 14 pipe bombs, which were sent to critics of President Donald Trump.

The 56-year-old faces five charges, including allegedly mailing explosives and threatening ex-presidents, after a package sent to Barack Obama was intercepted, as was one sent to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

He is set to appear in court later today.

Zucker assured staff that CNN mail is being screened at off-site facilities, “so this package would NOT have come directly to the CNN Center, even if it hadn't been intercepted first”, CNN reported.
