Budget supermarket Lidl has announced it will open a new, 38-acre warehouse site in Gildersome, Leeds, as part of its plans for long-term expansion.

The new location will operate as a regional distribution centre for the company, and is expected to create around 500 jobs.

Lidl is currently undertaking a £1.45bn expansion, with 16 distribution sites supporting its 720 stores. Last year, it opened distribution sites in Exeter and Wednesbury.

Ingo Fischer, Lidl UK director for expansion and development, said: “As we continue to open new stores and serve more customers across the country, it’s important that we also continue to build foundations for the future. This latest investment joins a long line of Lidl warehouses set to open over the next seven years, which are all vital in supporting our growth.”

Lidl and fellow cut-price chain Aldi have undergone a massive expansion in recent years, challenging the industry’s giant by offering a more narrow range of goods at deeply discounted rates.

There are reports that supermarket chain Tesco is set to launch a new discount store format next week in a bid to compete with Aldi and Lidl.

The UK’s biggest supermarket advertised recruitment for retail assistants, customer service assistants and manager roles for a new store format in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, earlier this year.
