ARGOS has pledged to help some of the 9.5m Britons who still lack basic online skills by offering training courses at over 120 of its UK stores.

In a statement released today, Argos said around 10,000 people will be able to sign up to workshops across the UK designed to teach the basic skills such as how to use a tablet, connect to and surf the internet and use a search engine.

Argos also plans to entice people to sign up for the £20 course by offering all attendees a free tablet and a one-year subscription to broadband from TalkTalk.

The workshops are being launched in partnership with digital skills charity Go ON UK and will run until mid-January, Argos said.

The retailer, owned by Home Retail Group, said the courses follow recent data from Ofcom showing that the number of adults using tablets to go online almost doubled year on year to 44 per cent.

Chief executive John Walden said: “The digital revolution continues apace, however, millions remain on the side-lines. Argos Internet Workshops have been developed to help people overcome the barriers of access and affordability and improve their knowledge, understanding and confidence in digital technology.”
