Aldi plans store assault on Greater London

Aldi is planning to open a further eight stores in Greater London this year, creating 600 new jobes, as part of the supermarket's plans to double its presence around the UK.

The new stores will be in Enfield, South Norwood, Tooting and Coulson. It will also open in Ewell, Surrey; Dartford in Kent and Essex towns Ilford and Romford.

It follows the launch of a store in New Malden in March.  Prior to this, Aldi had only three stores in the capital – Kilburn, Tottenham and the Old Kent Road – and 16 in Greater London.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of buying, said: “Greater London is a key area of growth for the business. With this will come a significant number of job opportunities for the Greater London area for both our existing and forthcoming stores.”

The supermarket, which this morning was revealed to have overtaken Waitrose becoming the sixth largest grocer in the UK, will require around 500 general store staff, 40 assistant store managers and 10 store managers to run its London openings.

The move is part of a wider expansion plan previously revealed, with Aldi hoping to double in size, reaching 1,000 stores by 2022.
