…and Terry puts the boot in

Chelsea captain John Terry has turned the tables on Manchester United by saying they, and not the Blues, are the ones who are past their best.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sparked a row last month by suggesting Chelsea’s squad was too old to improve on last season, when they finished second to his side in the Champions League and Premier League.

But Terry insists his side will raise their game under new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, and that the current United team has already peaked.

“Manchester United have had two good years and you have to stand back and take your hat off to them,” said Terry. “But we know we were good last year and we have another level to go to.

“Last year I think we saw the very best of Man United, but we have got an awful lot to come from last year. We have got improvements to make but I think Man United are at their peak.”

Terry missed a penalty in the Champions League final shoot-out to hand United the European Cup and the double.

But despite struggling to get over that disappointment, the England central defender insists it is the domestic title that the Blues crave most. “We’ve had talks and the Premier League is the one we’re after,” he added. “To get that back off Man United would be fantastic.”
