#awks: Twitter finance chief Anthony Noto’s Twitter account gets hacked

By: Lynsey Barber

No one on Twitter wants to look like they don’t know how to use Twitter, especially when you’re Twitter’s finance chief.

Even worse is when it’s the second gaffe in as many months.

Anthony Noto, newish CFO and former Goldman Sachs man, has had his Twitter account hacked.

A string of spammy tweets were sent out by Noto urging followers to click on a funny link (that old chestnut). The messages went out to, among others, Vine co-founder Rus Yusupov and fellow Twitter colleague Menker Johannes.

Noto has cleaned up his account, deleting the messages, and is now back tweeting as himself. Whether his most recent tweet, “back on the field”, is a reference to the hack or one of his favourite topics on Twitter, sports, is debatable.

The irony of the hack falling on Safer Internet Day – a day dedicated to promoting online security and safety – probably isn’t lost on the Twitter executive.

It’s not the first time Noto has had an awkward moment on the platform either.

He fell into another Twitter trap back in November- the classic tweet/direct message mix up.

Noto accidentally made public a message referencing an acquisition which read: "I still think we should buy them. He is on your schedule for Dec 15 or 16 — we will need to sell him. I have a plan"
