BAE brings Iron Man tech to the battlefield

Anyone who's tried a first person shooter is familiar with the heads-up display.

Players are used to their screens displaying vital tactical information right in front of them. You might have seen the same thing in the Iron Man comic books and films.

Now the real world is catching up, with BAE Systems releasing the latest version of their own Q-Warrior system.

It's designed to bring greater situational awareness to foot soldiers, and will show up waypoints, other points of interest, and targets. The helmet also boasts enhanced night vision functions and will display textual warnings and threats.

Paul Wright, soldier systems' business development lead at BAE, suggests that the first to adopt the technology will likely "be within non-traditional military units" such as Special Forces personnel during counter terrorist tasks.

"Iron Man presented an unachievable, invincible warrior capability but modern technology such as Q-Warrior is starting to bring some of that capability to the next generation of specialist soldiers," says Wright.
