Ambulances queue up outside hospitals as Covid puts pressure on NHS
Ambulance strikes this week risk causing major disruption to an already strained NHS.

The Office for National Statistics said this morning that there were a total of 995 Covid-related deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending November 5.

This is up 16 per cent on the previous week and is the highest number since the week to March 12.

Around one in 12 (8.6 per cent) of all deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to November 5 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate.

Some 111 care home resident deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales were registered in the week to November 5, down slightly from 112 in the previous week.

In total, 44,006 care home residents in England and Wales have had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began.

The ONS figures cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes.

Including the latest numbers, it means a total of 168,600 deaths have occurred in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. The highest number on a single day was 1,484 on January 19.

During the first wave of the virus, the daily toll peaked at 1,461 on April 8 2020.

More than 76,000 extra deaths – or “excess deaths” – have taken place in private homes in England and Wales since the pandemic began, according to the ONS figures.

A total of 76,438 excess deaths were registered between March 7 2020 and November 5 2021. Of this number, only 8,897 – 12 per cent – were deaths involving Covid-19.
