Conservative party conference: Sol Campbell hates Ed Miliband’s mansion tax … loves castles

Never a dull moment at the Tory party conference, especially when you’ve got football legend Sol Campbell tweeting on your side. The former Arsenal and England star sent a series of messages yesterday ripping into Labour’s plans for a mansion tax. “An Englishman’s home is his castle, there will be uproar with this tax!” he blustered. “Hear, hear” resounded across Birming­ham. 
 
Also overheard was the sound of culture minister Ed Vaizey and legendary composer Mike Blatt singing an acappella version of The Wombles of Wimbledon at the UK Music party, joined by UK Music chief Jo Dipple. Vaizey, when asked what song David Cameron should walk out to when he delivers his keynote speech today said, with a none-too-subtle reference to his party’s Lib Dem Coalition partners: “We can’t go on with Suspicious Minds.”

Meanwhile, UKIP was still revelling in its most recent Tory convert, former deputy mayor Richard Barnes, hitting back at Boris’ Hoover comment. “Perhaps he had Hoovers on his mind, given the way UKIP are currently hoovering up his former colleagues,” a spokesperson wrote on UKIP Daily. Indeed.
