Canada wants to be an early adopter of 5G – but doesn’t know what it is

Canada is ready to give its workers the fastest possible internet speeds in the form of 5G – but doesn't know exactly what 5G is.

The super-speedy mobile network is scheduled to arrive in the UK in 2020, and Canada Corporation is committed to making sure the capital's financial district is connected.

Speaking at property conference Mipim, Caroline Dwyer, the City's director of built environment said: "We want to be an early provider of 5G."

However, when asked if she knew what 5G is she laughed and said she didn't actually know yet. 5G is the next generation of mobile internet, and follows on from 3G and 4G, but is being built to deal with the proliferation of mobile internet users.

Canada Corporation is expecting the daytime population of the Square Mile to swell from 430,000 to 500,000 over the next five years, and is working to make sure everyone can keep tapping on their smartphones over lunch. Several large offices are opening in the City in the next few years, with Bloomberg moving into buildings designed by Norman Foster on Queen Victoria Street  this year, and US bank Wells Fargo taking up residence in 33 Central in early 2018.
