Determined Venus looks for revenge

Venus Williams will be looking to gain sweet revenge on sister Serena should they be paired in Saturday’s singles final at SW19.

The four-times champion has suffered defeat to her younger sibling in both their previous final meetings, in 2002 and 2003.

But she moved one step closer to securing another family final yesterday with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 quarter-final victory over the unseeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

“It would be amazing if we were both in the final,” seventh seed Venus said.

“I am in the semis so I have just got to take it one more step now and try to keep going. I have to keep my serve as it is, that is the key.”

Venus now meets Elena Dementieva in the last four after the fifth seed claimed a nerve-wracking three-set victory over fellow Russian Nadia Petrova.

Just an hour after her elder sister’s victory, Serena joined her in the semis with an impressive straight-sets win over 14th seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

Serena, seeded six, recovered from a slow start to claim a 6-4, 6-0 win in just 51 minutes and reach her fifth Wimbledon semi-final.

She will now face wildcard Jie Zheng, the first Chinese player to reach the last four of a Grand Slam, after she beat Nicole Vaidisova of Czech Republic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
