The John Lewis Monty effect? Devonshire Square p-p-p-picks up a penguin for one day only

We're not sure if it’s the John Lewis effect or just a coincidence, but it seems one’s Christmas party isn’t complete these days without a troop of live penguins. This week, it was Devonshire Square, which rolled out the ice carpet for the Antarctic’s best export – hosting a group of the animals in a bid to raise awareness for their conser­vation. 
 
Experienced penguin handlers were on, er, hand to answer any questions about the cute critters and WWF’s viral video campaign #penguindancebattle took hold, as members of the Devonshire Square events team led passers by in a penguin dance. 
 

 
We imagine the penguins and passers by were equally as bemused. The square’s Christmas market continues until Saturday, with a smorgasbord of gifts, food and drink, and next Wednesday you’ll be able to go down and see some ice sculptures being created.
