Ebola flight risk mapped: British Airways cancels UK routes

By: Billy Ehrenberg

As the Ebola crisis continues, British Airways has cancelled flights to Sierra Leone and Liberia, cutting off the only direct flights to London.

In a statement, the airline said it was unable to continue flights "due to the deteriorating public-health situation" in the area.

The situation has intensified recently with new cases reported in Nigeria. One man who has recently visited the area is under observation in New York after reporting Ebola-like symptoms.

Two US medics have already been flown back to the US after contracting the disease and are currently receiving an experimental serum.

So far there have been more than 1,600 reported cases and over 850 deaths, with a mortality rate of around 60 per cent. In some outbreaks the rate has been closer to 90 per cent.

Both the World Health Organisation and the World Bank have donated funds, with the latter pledging £120m to Libera, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help contain the disease.

Ebola is currently untreatable.

The interactive map below shows the infected areas and the 41 countries which are one flight away, according to Skyscanner (see disclaimer below map). Quartz made a similar visualisation last week and found 35.

If you are viewing the map on mobile, please swipe on the right-hand side of the map to scroll down.

The map shows the routes to the countries currently listed on SkyScanner and actual routes may vary. Routes are between major cities in the respective countries and represent flights between the countries, not the cities. Data should be checked before assumptions are made and we will endeavour to check and update the map. The routes in blue suggest the likely routes still operating with red signifying the routes cancelled by BA.
