England v Spain player ratings: How the Three Lions fared against the three-time European champions

By: Ross McLean

Add as a preferred source on Google

Joe Hart 5

A virtual bystander in the first half, no meaningful shot to save and bowed out at the break to give Heaton some game time

Nathaniel Clyne 6

Not the omni-rampaging full-back as is the norm for Liverpool but barely put a foot wrong and had the beating of his direct opponents

Danny Rose 6

Similar to Clyne in so far as not attackingly adventurous in the main but what he needed to do defensively was done with minimal fuss

John Stones 7

Played Dier into trouble once in the first half but much more assured, risk-averse and mature than previous performances

Gary Cahill 5

Replaced at half time by Everton’s Jagielka. Like the rest of England’s defence, was largely untroubled in the opening 45 minutes

Eric Dier 6

Barely noticeable but churned through an enormous amount of dirty work, although was caught under the ball for Isco’s late equaliser

Jordan Henderson 7

Picked out Vardy for England’s second strike. Formed an effective midfield shield with Dier and was a vocal presence

Raheem Sterling 8

Struggled against Scotland but was much more purposeful against the three-time European champions. Slick, dangerous and penetrative

Adam Lallana 8

Only lasted 23 minutes but was cultured and energetic. His vision and technique created the opening goal and he made no mistake from the spot

Jesse Lingard 7

Retained possession well and linked nicely with Raheem Sterling especially. Does not look out of place at international level

Jamie Vardy 7

His pace frightened the Spanish backline, Martinez in particular, and he put a welcome end to his 14-game goal-drought

Substitutes

Theo Walcott (Lallana, 23) 6

Largely subdued after replacing Lallana and should have netted early in the second half

Phil Jagielka (Cahill, 46) 6

Veteran status these days but showed he still has something to offer on the international stage

Tom Heaton (Hart, 46) 5

Kept out Silva and Morata but was beaten by Aspas and Isco late on

Andros Townsend (Sterling, 65) 5

Not a major influence but kept his side’s shape and worked hard

Marcus Rashford (Vardy, 67) 5

Chances to use his pace to expose a porous Spain defence never materialised

Aaron Cresswell (Rose, 79) 5

England cameo debut ended on a sour note as La Roja retaliated
