England v Germany - UEFA Euro 2020: Round of 16
Harry Kane's goal against Germany raised hopes that football is coming home

More than 20m people tuned into the BBC yesterday to watch England’s 2-0 victory over Germany at Euro 2020.

The historic clash attracted a peak audience of 20.6m viewers, representing more than 80 per cent of audience share.

The bumper numbers mean almost a third of the UK population settled in for the game, which is now the most-watched programme of the year.

The BBC has stolen the crown from ITV, which attracted 11.6m viewers for England’s match against Scotland.

Last night’s showdown — the first time England have beaten Germany in the knockout round of a major tournament since 1966 — also pulled in an additional 6.5m streams across BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport.

The match racked up 5.6m streams on iPlayer, marking a new record for live viewing.

The BBC will also show England’s quarter-final clash against Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night.

TV viewing numbers have surged in recent weeks as millions of Brits tune in to follow the Three Lions’ progress.

ITV has also benefited from the higher audiences, marking a major advertising boost for the channel after a pandemic-induced slump in revenue.

The public service broadcaster attracted a combined audience of 13.6m on Monday night as France’s dramatic loss to Switzerland coincided with the return of Love Island.
