Ferrari recalls 3,000 F458 Italia and F458 Spider sports cars – for the most action movie reason imaginable
By now, we're used to the likes of Toyota recalling vehicles in their thousands – but when you've paid the price of a two-bed semi for a sports car, we'd imagine you expect to be able to keep hold of it.
Not always. Italian luxury car manufacturer Ferrari has just recalled 3,000 of its F458 Italia and F458 Spider models – which cost about £200,000 each – because the latch that opens the boot from inside only works when the car is moving.
The glitch doesn't sound like more than a minor niggle, but Ferrari is worried about safety.
In the event an individual is trapped in the trunk and the latch system does not release the trunk lid, it increases the risk of personal injury or possibly death.
In other words, if someone gets trapped in the boot (which is actually in the front of the cars, as they are rear-engine drives), they can only release themselves when the car is moving. The cars' top speed is 200mph.
Alright, so it's not every day someone finds themselves in the boot of a luxury sports car – but US law requires all cars to have a working latch inside, just in case things get a bit Bourne Identity and someone gets stuck.
Both models have been received well by petrolheads: Top Gear called the 458 Italia a "transcendently wonderful car". Although it's unlikely its reviewers experienced it from the comfort of the boot…
