Former England skipper Steven Gerrard linked with vacant managerial position at League One MK Dons

Former England skipper Steven Gerrard could be set to cut his teeth in management after being linked with the vacant position as boss of League One strugglers Milton Keynes Dons.

The 36-year-old midfielder, who won eight major trophies during a 17-year-old stint with boyhood club Liverpool, this week announced his intention to leave LA Galaxy when his contract expires next month.

Gerrard, who is yet to confirm whether he intends to end his playing career when he departs the Major League Soccer side, is believed to be one of a number of candidates in the frame to replace Karl Robinson.

The manager’s post at MK Dons, founded in 2004 following Wimbledon’s controversial relocation, would be a far cry from Gerrard’s playing career, which has almost exclusively seen him feature at the highest of levels. MK Dons are currently 21st in League One.

Gerrard, who is currently pursuing his Uefa A coaching licence, has also been linked with moves to Scottish giants Celtic and Championship outfit Newcastle.

Either of those avenues would see Gerrard reunited with former Liverpool managers, with Brendan Rodgers in charge of Celtic and Rafael Benitez at Newcastle.
