Helping young cancer patients thrive, not just survive

The UK’s leading cancer support charity for children, young people and their families, CLIC Sargent is launching an exciting new grant scheme in collaboration with Societe Generale. At CLIC Sargent we’re all about helping young people to thrive, not just survive when they receive a cancer diagnosis. When we partnered with Societe Generale earlier this year, we cemented our joint mission to provide more support to young cancer patients by improving access to education and employment.

Cancer can often put life on hold for young people on the brink of adulthood. Diagnosis and treatment can have a huge impact on their hopes, goals and aspirations for the future. Our research has shown that more than two thirds of young people were worried about the impact that cancer will have on their education and almost three quarters were worried about the impact on their future employment.

When a young person is diagnosed with cancer it can have a devastating impact on their ability to keep up with school or university when they are receiving treatment miles away from home, for months at a time. We’ve also heard from young people who have been forced to give up their job and put their career on hold because of the impact treatment has had on their physical or mental health.

That’s why I’m so pleased that Societe Generale and CLIC Sargent are now launching the ‘Thrive Not Just Survive’ grant for 14 to 24-year-olds who have been diagnosed with cancer and are looking to get their education or career back on track – or even to pursue a new ambition.

Under the new grant scheme, young people will be able to apply for up to £5,000 to support tuition or course fees, purchasing tools for an apprenticeship, or equipment/materials for a course such as a laptop or text books. We will have three different tiers to suit their needs; gold (£3-5k), silver (£1-3k) or bronze grant (up to £1k).

Young people have until Sunday 11 November to apply. We know that every young person is different so they can choose to submit their application in different ways – this could be by writing a letter, writing a business case or even creating a video. After the closing date applications will be reviewed by a panel made up of staff from CLIC Sargent and Societe Generale.

I’m thrilled that through our partnership with Societe Generale, CLIC Sargent will be able to support more young cancer patients to achieve their dreams, helping to limit the damage cancer causes beyond their health.
