Hipster croissant wins World’s Best Baked Dish

When one considers where to get the world’s finest baked goods, especially the world’s best croissant – London’s hipster epicentre Shoreditch wouldn’t normally be on the top of the hit list. But grab your fixie and dig out those black rimmed glasses, things are about to change.

Chowster announced the winners of the 2014 World’s Tastiest Fast Feasts last night and London came on top for the Best Baked Dish category for Albion’s fried jam croissant (it seems like a right kick in the goolies for our French cousins but Albion’s head baker Matthieu Cauty is Parisian).

Part owned by British designer-cum-restaurateur Terence Conran, The Albion Cafe is part of trendy The Boundary complex – just off Shoreditch’s Redchurch Street. Of its soon-to-be-famed fried jam croissant, the judges had this to say:

“This calorie bomb will take your breath away. Wave after wave of flavors hit you — from the flaky croissant, the fruity jam, the crunch of crystalized sugar and what surely must be an entire stick of butter. As you plan your last meal on the planet, this over-the-top “croissant” should be part of your farewell menu.”

Hubba hubba. For City workers, this calorific dreamboat is but a short walking distance.

While Shoreditch won big, the rest of London lost out for the title of World’s Foodiest City. It was in the shortlist along with Bangkok, Lima, Singapore and Vancouver but was pipped by the Thai capital.

The best overall dish (should you be travelling around Lima and in the market for a fast tasty snack) was a ceviche dish from the Chez Wong restaurant in the Peruvian capital.

But at least we can console ourselves with Albion’s jammy delights. Oh, and you could always go in for the winner of 2013’s Best Dish which can be found just around the corner on Bethnal Green Road, the Story Deli’s margarita.
