Sadiq Khan has triumphed in the race to become Mayor of London while Labour also dominated in the London Assembly elections.

Around 3pm, Bexley & Bromley became the first of the London constituencies to announce and the Tories' Gareth Bacon won. That was followed by a win from Labour's Leonie Cooper in Merton and Wandsworth, with more wins for each of the two main parties in West Central and Lambeth and Southwark.

The final result puts Labour on 12 seats and the Tories on eight with the Green party on two and Ukip winning the same number. The Lib Dem won one seat.

Despite drama in Barnet, polls closed at 10 o'clock on Thursday night – but counting across the capital's London Assembly constituencies didn't begin until 8am on Friday.

The turnout, meanwhile, was indicated at 44 per cent – the second highest ever for a London mayoral election.
