Murray: I’ve shown I’m as good as Nadal

British No1 Andy Murray insists he has what it takes to cause a huge upset and knock world No2 Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon today.

Murray thrilled Centre Court with a five-set win over Richard Gasquet on Monday, but goes into his first Grand Slam quarter-final as the underdog, having lost his three previous matches against Nadal.

Most recently, the pair played out an enthralling clash at last year’s Australian Open, which the athletic Spaniard eventually won in five sets.

But Murray says taking two sets from Nadal proves he can match the second seed, and believes his improved stamina will only increase his chances against the man tipped to end Roger Federer’s dominance at SW19.

“When I played Nadal in Australia, I learned that I can play at his level – for four and a half sets at least,” said the Scot. “It’s going to be a completely different match to a year and a half ago. He’s really improved on grass since then and I’m a better player as well.

“It’s really important to serve well, be aggressive and not let him dictate the rallies. He’s the favourite for the match but I obviously think I can win.”

Centre Court took Murray to its heart on Monday, willing on the 12th seed when he seemed beaten, at two sets down. The 21-year-old responded by mounting an unforgettable comeback, and is looking for more help when he returns to the 15,000-capacityvenue to face Nadal.

“It’s an awesome feeling – the best support I’ve ever had in a match in my life,” said Murray. “I’m sure the atmosphere will be like that again. When it happens, you have to really enjoy it.

“I think it’s very important to try and use the energy of the crowd to get on top of your opponent. It’s my job to make sure I give them something to shout about.”
