Nigel Farage’s face adorns condoms at the Ukip party conference

Ukip has struggled for headlines in recent months, with its conference in Birmingham this weekend failing to make the kind of impact the party enjoyed at its peak before the EU referendum.

But despite polling below five per cent, the party is back in the limelight now, but perhaps not for a reason it might want to be.

Political correspondent Michael Crick tweeted a picture of condoms available in the conference's Ukip Young Independence shop.

Priced at £1 each or £2 for 4, with "For when you have a hard Brexit” emblazoned below a picture of a smirking Nigel Farage.

Note the slogan “For when you have a hard brexit” https://t.co/M4netG6hmE

The post gained traction on social media with jokes and witticisms aimed at Farage and his party from multiple users.

As if someone going to the UKIP young independence shop is going to ever need 4 condoms

Highly effective. Prevents pregnancy by completely eliminating any prospect of sex. https://t.co/hJDAwoeCQj

It also attracted criticisms from Farage's usual detractors. Television host and arch-Remainer Gary Lineker also took the themed condoms to task.

Should do well. Plenty of dicks there. 🤪 https://t.co/DCOuJpUu2P

David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, added:

It's usually the condom on the 🛎🔚 not the other way round.https://t.co/PK8TI5QBNT
