Terminals 1 and 2 at Munich airport have reopened after four hours following a security breach earlier this morning.

Approximately 130 flights were cancelled after federal police ordered the cessation of passenger handling in Terminal 2 and in two areas of Terminal 1 after a passenger opened an emergency exit door to Terminal 2 this morning.

Passenger check-in resumed at 11:13 a.m local time, but passengers could not enter Terminal 2 until 12:45 p.m to prevent overcrowding.

The airport warned that there would be knock-on delays throughout the day.

The person appeared to have bypassed passport and security controls by using the emergency exit to enter the area from which flights to countries outside of the Schengen area take off.

In a statement on its website, the airport said: “According to the information currently available, a person probably entered the clean area of Terminal 2 through an emergency exit door from the unclean area.

“As a result, police measures are currently in progress.

“Terminal 2 and areas B and C of Terminal 1 are currently closed. Access to Terminal 2 is currently blocked. Water is currently being made available in the affected areas and passengers are being informed about the situation via loudspeaker announcements. As soon as we have further information, we will inform passengers via the known channels.”

Lufthansa tweeted:

Information for all passengers @MUC_Airport: Terminal 2 and areas B and C of Terminal 1 are currently closed. As soon as we have further information, we will inform you via the known channels. 2/2 https://t.co/rMtRdjybnc

Passengers tweeted asking why the airport had been closed:

Nothing is moving. No one can leave the airport, no departures. Munich is one of the busiest hubs and it's peak time. #munichairport
