Ex-Liverpool boss Christian Purslow joins Chelsea in new commercial role

Chelsea have hired former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow to run the club's global commercial activities

Purslow is not a direct replacement for chief executive Ron Gourlay who departed Stamford Bridge last week, with chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia assuming his responsibilities.

“The club has ambitious plans to build the Premier League’s most pioneering global commercial programme,” read a Chelsea club statement. “The club believes Mr Purslow has the vision and the leadership qualities to help us achive these plans.”

Purslow, 50, spent 16 months at Anfield and oversaw the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures, now Fenway Sports Group, in 2010, remaining on the club’s board until February 2011.

Update: This article has been updated to clarify Christian Purslow's role at Chelsea
