Shock as England cricket starlet Maynard is killed by Tube train

ENGLAND will begin today’s second one-day international against West Indies under a cloud after the sudden and tragic death yesterday of one of the country’s brightest prospects, Tom Maynard.

Surrey batsman Maynard, 23, was hit by a London Underground train at Wimbledon Park station at 5am after a man matching his description fled from officers who stopped a car being driven erratically, police said.

Maynard, the son of former England player Matthew, joined Surrey from home county Glamorgan last year and was tipped to follow in his father’s footsteps and earn selection for the senior set-up.

“He had the world at his feet,” said England cricket managing director Hugh Morris.

Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes was yesterday drafted into the one-day squad after Surrey paceman Jade Dernbach withdrew on compassionate grounds.

British Transport Police said Maynard’s death was not being treated as suspicious, while police watchdog the IPCC has opened its own investigation.
