Theresa May to hold conference call with 150 business leaders

Theresa May will hold a conference call with 150 CEOs on Friday to brief them on the state of the Brexit talks.

The call is part of a charm offensive of the business community following a fractious period – summed up by former foreign secretary Boris Johnson claiming “f*** business” when it came to the Brexit talks.

At the Conservative Party conference earlier in October, former CBI chief Lord Digby Jones described Johnson as “irrelevant and offensive” for making the remark.

At the same event, Chancellor Philip Hammond tried to smooth over any potential conflict with those involved in enterprise, saying: “Just in case anyone, anywhere, was in any doubt at all, let me say it loud and clear: The Conservative Party is, and always will be, the party of business."

The call on Friday, due to take place at 4.30pm, will last about half an hour, but the volume of participants means not everyone will get to ask a question according to the Financial Times.

A Downing Street source told CityAM: “The Government is committed to making sure business stays informed of our progress in the negotiations.

"This call is an important part of that process.”
