Uber trials bus-route style pick-ups in San Francisco

Uber's not content with just offering rides on-demand in hundreds of cities around the world. Now the startup is trialing a new feature that offers bus-style pick-ups along certain routes.

The so-called "smart routes" are being tested out on the streets of San Francisco and build upon its existing Uber Pool service that lets you split a ride with someone if they are heading roughly in the same direction as you.

Users will be able to hail a ride on these routes, saving $1 on their ride, TechCrunch reports. Uber told the site the move is part of its "ongoing efforts to increase the efficiency of driver-partners' time spent on the road while helping riders save time and money".

While standard taxi hailing is Uber's bread and butter, it has dipped its toes into other types of services including food, with UberFresh grocery delivery and UberEat meal delivery. The billion-dollar startup also tested out UberRush, delivering various shopping items in an instant in New York City – and there have been rumours of specialist shopping delivery solely for luxury goods.
