World Cup In Play Betting Markets Explained

In-play betting, also known as live betting, means placing a wager on a match after it has already kicked off, with odds updating in real time based on the score, time remaining, and match events. Most UK sportsbooks pair live streaming directly with in-play betting, so you can watch the action and place bets simultaneously in the same app.

The following in-play markets are available on World Cup matches at leading UK sportsbooks:

  • Next Goal Scorer: Back a named player to score the next goal in the match.
  • Next Team to Score: Back either team to score based on how the match is developing.
  • Total Goals (Over/Under): Bet on whether the total number of goals in the match will be over or under a set line, updated in real time.
  • Both Teams to Score: Back Yes or No on whether both sides will score before full time.
  • Correct Score: Predict the exact final scoreline.
  • Cards and Corners: Bet on the number of yellow or red cards, or corners, to be awarded in the remaining time.
  • Half-Time Result: Available from kick-off and updated through the first half; back the score at the interval.
  • To Qualify / To Progress: Used in knockout matches; covers the full 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties.

Platform-specific features available during live World Cup betting:

  • Early Payout: Pre-match 1X2 bets are settled as winners the moment your team goes two goals ahead, regardless of the final score.
  • Edit Bet: Amend your selection, stake, or odds on a live bet before it settles.
  • Cash Out: Lock in a return at any point during the match on eligible bets. Available on singles, accas, and Bet Builders at most major UK sportsbooks.
  • Bet Builder: Combine multiple markets from a single match into one bet.

World Cup Match Previews and In Play Tips

  • Group A: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czech Republic.
Mexico are the top seeds courtesy of being one of the tournament co-hosts. They will play all three group games on home turf which, given their fanatical support and the likely blistering heat, will give them a huge advantage. The other three teams will take points off each other but South Korea have the ability, and organisation, to secure the runners-up spot.
  • Group B: Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland

Arguably the weakest of the 12 groups due to Canada also being a top seed. Switzerland rarely fail at major tournaments and have an experienced squad led by Granit Xhaka.Canada should claim second place, although they will be desperate for Alphonso Davies to be declared fit, with Qatar and Bosnia-Herzegovina making up the numbers.

  • Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland

Not an easy group for Scotland to navigate alongside five-time winners Brazil and (controversially awarded) AFCON champions Morocco. Steve Clarke’s side need to beat Haiti and avoid heavy defeats in their other two games in a bid to go through as one of the best third-placed finishers. Morocco will test Brazil but expect Carlo Ancelotti’s men to top the pool.

  • Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, Turkey

The jury remains out on Mauricio Pochettino’s USA side and this will be a stern test with all four sides sitting between 16 and 40 in the FIFA World Rankings. Paraguay are strong defensively, Australia will have their customary competitive edge while Turkey have star power provided by Real Madrid’s Arda Guler. It’s tough to see the States finishing in the top two but third is not out of the question.

  • Group E: Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador

Germany will go in as group favourites but that was also the case in 2018 and 2022 when they failed to reach the knockout stages. Ecuador conceded just five goals in 18 South American qualifiers – albeit playing at altitude undoubtedly helped – while Ivory Coast have young talent in Amad Diallo and Yan Diomande. Curacao will struggle to pick up a point.

  • Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

A difficult group to call. The Netherlands are favourites but will have to avoid defeat in their opener against an impressive Japan side. Sweden can boast a front two of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres although they struggled to qualify. Tunisia weren’t particularly impressive at the most recent AFCON and will do well to avoid fourth place.

  • Group G: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand

Belgium’s Golden Generation is long gone but they still possess enough quality to justify their status as group favourites. Iran are the second-highest ranked team and will be strong – on the assumption they take part. Mohamed Salah will see this as a chance to show the world he is still one of the game’s greats ahead of a summer move away from Liverpool. New Zealand will likely struggle.

  • Group H: Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay

Spain are rightly among the tournament favourites and the European champions ought to cruise through this group. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay should finish second while Saudi Arabia look a good bet for third. Cape Verde should enjoy the experience but are unlikely to pick up a point. One of the easier pools to predict.

  • Group I: France, Senegal, Iraq, Norway

France have an abundance of riches, particularly in attack, and should be able to overpower teams, particularly if Didier Deschamps releases the handbrake in his final tournament in charge. Senegal will be eager to make up for their AFCON disappointment while Erling Haaland will spearhead Norway’s challenge. Iraq will be competitive but that may not be enough to go through.

  • Group J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan

Ignore the doubt, Lionel Messi will be present and will still be one of the best players even though he turns 39 midway through the tournament. Argentina rode Messi’s brilliance to win in Qatar 2022 and they will likely go deep again. Austria and Algeria will battle it out for second but both could go through on the assumption they will beat Jordan.

  • Group K: Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia

Cristiano Ronaldo will be eager to show he can still cut it with the best and Portugal certainly have the talent to give him that platform. Colombia are a dangerous outsider, particularly if Luis Diaz maintains his Bayern Munich form, and DR Congo could snatch third place from Uzbekistan.

  • Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

England will go in as group favourites but it is worth remembering Croatia finished as runners-up in 2018 and in third place four years ago in Qatar. The Three Lions *should* be too strong for them this time round but don’t be surprised if their pool opener ends in stalemate. It will then come down to the games against Panama and Ghana as to who finishes top. Panama are the stronger of the two, ranked 41 places higher than the Africans.

World Cup In Play Betting Tips

  • Wait for confirmed line-ups before committing: Sportsbook odds typically lag confirmed team announcements by 30 to 45 minutes. Waiting until line-ups are confirmed, then acting quickly on in-play markets once the game has settled, is always recommended.
  • Use Draw No Bet in tight knockout matches: In knockout football, Draw No Bet backs a team to win in 90 minutes and returns your stake if the match ends level (only available for group stages).
  • Factor in altitude at Mexican venues: Three Mexican venues; Estadio Azteca, Estadio Akron, and Estadio BBVA in Monterrey sit significantly above sea level, with Azteca at approximately 2,200 metres. European sides visiting altitude venues for the first time typically see a measurable drop in intensity after the 70th minute. Keep this in mind when placing bets.
  • Understand the new Round of 32 format: For the first time, the World Cup features a Round of 32 knockout stage before the Round of 16. This means group stage finishing position is more strategically important than ever. Group winners draw a best third-placed team or weaker runner-up in the Round of 32, giving them a noticeably easier path.
  • Use Early Payout to lock in value on favourites: Some bookmakers settle pre-match 1X2 bets as winners the moment your team goes two goals ahead, at any point in the match.
  • Group stage matchday 3 is the highest-risk round for in-play betting: When both matches in a group run simultaneously on the final matchday, teams already qualified may rest first-choice players, and teams needing specific results to qualify as a best third-placed side may play cautiously or aggressively depending on what other groups are doing.
