England Test cricket captain Joe Root has condemned the racism scandal at his club Yorkshire.

Root said the allegations made by Azeem Rafiq and upheld by an investigation “hurt” because they were “so close to home”.

“These events have fractured our game and torn lives apart,” he said.

“It’s my club that I care passionately about it. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting.

“There is no debate about racism, no one side or other. It is simply intolerable.”

Root called for an overhaul at Yorkshire and offered to help.

He added: “I want to see change and actions that will see YCCC rise from this with a culture that harnesses a diverse environment with trust across all communities that support cricket in the county.”

Yorkshire have been widely criticised after deciding not to issue any punishment for the incidents against Rafiq and holding up publication of the report.

Sponsors including Nike and Yorkshire Tea cut their ties to the club, whose chairman stepped down last week after England cricket chiefs suspended Headingley as a venue for international matches.
