Apple Watch launch event is happening 9 March

Apple has revealed it is holding an event on 9 March at which it is widely expected to launch the Apple Watch.

The tech firm has sent out an invite for the "Spring Forward" event which will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

Chief executive Tim Cook announced Apple would launch a smartwatch at the launch of the iPhone 6 last year after months of rumours it was working on a device.

It showed off a selection of models at the event, however, details of the release date and pricing were not revealed other than early 2015 and from $349 (£227).

It's thought that these details will be announced at the event which will take place in less than two weeks time.

Options for the Apple Watch include two different sizes, 38mm or 42mm high, six different metals including stainless steel and 18-carat gold, and six different strap styles, including a link bracelet and sports band.  Users can also choose from a variety of face designs from chronograph to a photo, and change them on screen.

Functions of the watch include being able to make calls, send messages and emails. It also lets users communicate with others with a simple sketch, tap or digital version of your heartbeat.

The watch also monitors fitness through an activity app, much like the Nike Fuelband or Jawbone Up wearable fitness trackers.

Developers have already started working on apps for the Apple Watch which will include Instagram, ESPN and American Airlines.
