Passengers told to avoid King’s Cross on Bank Holiday weekend

Holidaymakers have been urged to check their bank holiday travel plans as engineering works means there will be disruption across London.

There will be no trains in and out of King’s Cross, one of the capital’s busiest stations, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August. A reduced service will run on Monday 26 August, meaning trains are likely to be busier and journeys will take longer.

Those wishing to get away have been told to travel on the Friday and following Monday instead.

Network Rail, which manages the UK railways, is delivering 448 projects across the bank holiday weekend, which will see £98m invested in the rail network.

Nearly 11,000 workers will descend on the tracks to deliver the upgrades.

Engineering work will also take place between Peterborough and Cambridge and King’s Cross, St Pancras and Moorgate.

Network Rail chief executive Andrew Haines said: “We are very aware that bank holiday engineering work affects many people who will have wanted to make the most of the long weekend.

“But the only reasons we do the work then is because it affects far fewer people than a closure on a normal working day.  We plan to use every minute of the closures to work towards delivering a service that our passengers deserve.

“And most of the railway network will be open as usual, only some routes will be closed, so if you are thinking about travelling please plan ahead.”
